Frequently Asked Questions

What fishing licenses do I need?

For any trip within Virginia and West Virginia, all clients need to have a valid state freshwater fishing license. Each state also requires trout licenses during specific seasons. In addition, National Forest Service fishing permits are required on any national forest lands. If you have any questions about what licenses are required for a particular trip, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. You can purchase licenses on the websites linked below.

What time of year is best for fly fishing?

We guide trips in Virginia year round. Every season has its perks, but there is always good fishing to be had. Different fisheries are better at different times of the year, but since we fish so many different rivers, streams, and spring creeks, something is always fishing well. Our West Virginia backcountry expeditions run from April, when the snow normally melts, through June, when the weather get too hot to safely catch and release trout.

What equipment do I need?

If you only bring one rod, the best all around rod is a 9 foot 5wt or 6wt. On smaller streams, 7-8 foot 2wt or 3wt rods can get the job done and will make even brook trout feel like monsters when they’re hooked. Flies are included and provided by your guide on our trips. If you are a fly tier or have flies at home that you like to use, feel free to bring them along. Leaders are also provided by the guides on our trips, as is tippet. We use a lot of 9' 4x and 5x leaders.

What about waders?

Bring them. On many trips we do a lot of wading, and you will want them (even if we are in the boat). They also make great rain pants. We do a lot of wet wading in July and August when the temperatures make full waders uncomfortable. We also prefer wading boots over neoprene socks (but wool socks will also do). If you need them, we can provide them.

What clothes should I bring?

Having multiple layers of clothing with you is important. Bring rain gear no matter what the weather report forecasts. Also, having a fleece or other type of jacket never hurts. On our West Virginia backcountry expeditions, when storms hit, it gets cold fast, even in the summer. We also recommend hats and sun gloves for UV protection during long days on the water. Polarized sunglasses help you see more fish and reduce eye strain. Meanwhile, a good fly fishing vest or sling pack is a must to carry your tackle, water, and other supplies.

What should I pack for my West Virginia backcountry expedition?

Because they are so remote and there are no local stores that offer fishing gear, we have put together a checklist for our West Virginia trips.

Where are the horseback riding forms I need to fill out?

Please click here for details on the riding information sheet and waiver.

How much should I tip my guide?

Gratuities for fly fishing guides average $100 per day. This is an important part of a guide's income, so please consider a nice tip if you feel like your guide worked hard to give you a great experience.

What is your cancellation policy?

Guided trips are normally held rain or shine, with the only exceptions being extreme weather events (flooding, thunderstorms, snow, etc.). However, our primary concern is for our clients to stay safe and have fun. Cool Water Outfitters will be in touch with you ahead of time, if we believe your trip should be postponed due to pending inclement weather. Clients may cancel or reschedule day trips, with 72 hours notice, without penalty. West Virginia backcountry trips require a 60-day cancellation notice, due to the scheduling of wranglers, horses, and camp staff.
